Tips for makeup beginners
Share
Starting with makeup is exciting—but it can also be a little overwhelming. There’s so much to choose from! But don’t worry—you’re not expected to know everything from the start. Here are my best beginner-friendly tips to help you get started with makeup, step by step.
Start simple
You don’t need a full makeup kit right away. Begin with just a few key items that make a big difference: a lightweight base (BB cream or foundation), concealer, blush, mascara, brow gel, and a tinted lip balm. Focus on a natural look you feel confident in—that's more than enough.
The right tools make a difference
A damp beauty sponge and a good makeup brush can really level up your routine. You don’t need every brush out there—just a few quality tools that can be used for multiple steps.
Know your skin type
Whether you have dry, oily, or sensitive skin, choosing the right products for your skin type is key. Go for a hydrating base if you're dry, something mattifying if you're oily, and gentle, fragrance-free options if your skin is sensitive. This makes your makeup feel better—and last longer—throughout the day.
Don’t be afraid to experiment
Nobody becomes an expert overnight. Practice in front of the mirror, watch tutorials, read beauty tips and take your time to figure out what works for you. Makeup should feel fun—not stressful.
Focus on the basics
Start by learning simple techniques like creating an even complexion, applying blush in the right spot, and brushing on mascara without clumps. Once the basics feel natural, you can explore more advanced looks—at your own pace.
Here are a few beginner-friendly tips to start with:
Foundation: Start in the center of your face and blend outwards using a sponge or brush
Concealer: Apply under the eyes in an upward triangle to brighten your look
Blush: Place it on the apples of your cheeks and sweep it upward toward your temples
Brows: Follow your natural shape—small, light strokes give a softer result
Mascara: Start at the base of your lashes and wiggle upward in a zigzag motion
Invest in a few reliable products
You don’t have to buy everything at once. Choose a few high-quality products you really enjoy using—like a foundation that matches your skin tone perfectly, a favorite mascara, or a versatile palette that includes blush, bronzer, contour and highlighter, all in one. (My personal favorite is the face palette from CAIA).
Remember: Makeup is for You
Makeup isn’t about hiding—it’s about highlighting what you already have. Don’t compare yourself to others. Makeup is a way to express yourself.
Summary: A beginner’s guide to makeup
Starting with makeup isn’t about perfection—it’s about exploring. Begin with the basics, get to know your skin, choose a few good products, and build your routine at your own pace. You’ll learn so much along the way—and I promise, it’ll only get easier and more fun each time!
